Zielona Góra is a historical city in Poland . It is situated in the western part of the country, in the Lubusz Voivodeship. The city has about 120 thousand inhabitants.

Glances into history

The history of the city goes back to the 13th century. The first record of a Slavonic settlement on this location comes from 1222. In 1323, Zielona Góra was given city privileges. Since 1740, the city was a part of Prussia and later Germany . It was officially annexed to Poland in 1945 by the Red Army. From 1852, vintages regularly take place there.

About the city- vintage

Zielona Góra is a clean and well-maintained city. It is an important industrial, educational and cultural center of the region. A university and the College of International Trade and Finance are seated in the city. The city's name originates from the fact that the city was built on several wooded hills. Zielona Góra is a world-famous "wine cellar". Wine cultivation has a centuries-long tradition there. The number of vineyards in the city and its surrounding is estimated to 4,000, most of them are directly in the city. As a result of that, the popular vintage annually takes place in the city.

Tourist attractions

The most significant monuments in Zielona Góra include the cathedral of St. Jadwiga, the church of the Virgin Mary Częstochowski, the town hall with a square, the Hunger Tower from the 15th century and the chapel from the 14th century. There is an astronomical observatory and the modern house Palm, in which you will find a luxurious restaurant, where you can taste local wines. The most visited museum is the Lubusz Museum dedicated to wine production. Another popular destination are the nearby lakes and race circuit, where speedway races take place. The city is unique for the number of natural landmarks- there are 81 of them within the boundaries of the city.

Entertainment

The biggest event taking place in Zielona Góra is the already mentioned vintage (Winobranie) . The celebrations include the so-called "Days of the City Zielona Góra", when wine tasting, street markets and many accompanying cultural events take place, e.g. the best Polish jazz musicians perform in the club Harlem. Other interesting events are the festival "Busker Bus" taking place on the turn of June and July and the International Folklore Festival in August. For more culture, you can visit a concert of the local symphonic orchestra (Filharmonie Tadeuzse Bairda) .

Transport

Zielona Góra is easily accessible by car, bus, train and plane. The former military airport, which serves for civil transport now, is situated near the city. There is a daily flight to Warsaw . The railway station is a 10-minutes walk from the Old Town (towards the east) . There are train links to e.g. Warsaw , Kraków , Gdańsk and Szczecin . Buses provide regional transport. By car, follow motorway S3 (E65) .
