Zemplinska Širava occupies an area of 33 km2. The dimensions of the dam are 3.5 km of width and 11 km of length. The average depth is 9.5 m and the maximum depth as much as 14 m. Zemplinska Širava was constructed in 1961–1965 and is formed by more than a 7 km long barrage. The dam is fed with water from the Laborec River. Zemplinska Širava is intended to protect against floods, for irrigation and it is used as an industrial source of water and for bathing.
There are seven holiday resorts by the dam, which offer accommodation, bathing in pools and food options. Zemplinska Širava is a popular destination of yachtsmen and windsurfers. The local holiday resorts organize many cultural events and other entertainment, such as motorbike rallies, live band performances and the Miss Zemplinska Širava contest. It is possible to jet ski, to rent paddle boats, to do go-karting and visit the hippocenter. The holiday-makers can also enjoy a boat trip on the dam. The surroundings are suitable for hiking, cycling and sight-seeing. Interestingly, Zemplinska Širava and its environs are among the warmest places in Slovakia . Therefore, you can bathe there also in September and sometimes in October.
