Zemplínska Šírava is a dam situated in eastern Slovakia , near the town of Michalovce . It is the second largest body of water in Slovakia . The average depth is 9.5 m and the maximum depth as much as 14 m. Zemplínska Šírava was constructed in 1961–1965 and is formed by more than a 7 km long barrage. The dam is fed with water from the Laborec River. Zemplínska Šírava is intended to protect against floods, for irrigation and it is used as an industrial source of water and for bathing..
Tourist Information
There are seven holiday resorts by the dam, which offer accommodation, bathing in pools and food options. Zemplínska Šírava is a popular destination of yachtsmen and windsurfers. The local holiday resorts organize many cultural events and other entertainment, such as motorbike rallies, live band performances and the Miss Zemplínska Šírava contest. It is possible to jet ski, to rent paddle boats, to do go-karting and visit the hippocenter. The holiday-makers can also enjoy a boat trip on the dam. The surroundings are suitable for hiking, cycling and sight-seeing. Interestingly, Zemplínska Šírava and its environs are among the warmest places in Slovakia .
