The Yungang Grottoes are a complex of caves in China . They are situated in the eastern part of the country, about 250 km west of the capital Beijing . The Yungang Grottoes are a complex of 252 caves with 51 000 sculptures. They show an excellent example of the Buddhist cave art in China from the 5th and 6th centuries. The biggest statue is 17 m high, while the smallest is only a few centimeters high. The rock caves of the Yungang Grottoes are also known for their size and their delicately carved sculptures. The most important caves are the ones created by the Buddhist monk called Tan Yao. Due to the uniformity of appearance and design, they are considered to be the top of Chinese Buddhist art.
