The dominant feature of the city is the Gothic cathedral York Minster . Its construction began almost one thousand years ago. Another interesting sight are the remains of the Gothic fortress Clifford's Tower located on a small hill close to the city center, whose construction was initiated by William the Conqueror. There is a beautiful view from the fortress upon a great part of York and its environs. In the city of York meet many historical narrow streets. The most well-known is The Shambles, the former location of butcher shops. If you take a narrow passageway from this street, you will get to a small square with the oldest pub in York – The Black Swan, which dates from the 14th century. In a quiet garden close to the city center is situated the Merchant Venturers’ Hall from the end of the 14th century. Till present day, the York city center is surrounded by 5 km of city walls where visitors are allowed to pass. The courageous visitors can visit The York Dungeon, which reveals the dark and gory period of the city of York. The (National Railway Museum ) will thrill visitors who are keen on trains, locomotives and everything related to the railroad.
