The Yasnaya Polyana Museum is the place where the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy was born and lived. It is a conservation area consisting of old buildings, parks and gardens. It is situated in the village of Yasnaja Polyana , approximately 10 km south of Tula , in Russia . The residence was built in the 17th century. It was initially owned by the Kartsev family, later by the Volkonskiy family, and eventually it became the property of Leo Tolstoy. Yasnaja Polyana is the place where the famous "War and Peace" or "Anna Karenina" were written. The Yasnaya Polyana Museum dedicated to Leo Tolstoy was founded here in 1921. During the Second World War, all exhibits had to be moved to the nearby city of Tomsk . In 1950, an extensive reconstruction took place, as the building was damaged by the war. The Yasnaya Polyana Museum owns collections of furniture, personal items of Leo Tolstoy and his library with more than 22,000 books.
