Xunantunich is an ancient ceremonious centre of the Maya culture. It is located in Belize , some 14 kilometres to the southwest from San Ignacio , situated atop a ridge above the Mopan River. This ancient structure is approximately 40 metres tall and it is located in the eastern part of Xunantunich. The pyramid offers a splendid view of the valley and the surrounding area. Xunantunich was developing from 2nd to 9th century. Its development was interrupted by a strong earthquake, which was obviously the reason why people escaped and never came back. A big part of the premises was destroyed by the earthquake. The area of Xunantunich is approximately 2.6 km². Xunantunich is an archeological site. Archaeological excavation and restoration work is still in progress. First professional archaeologists came to this site in 1894 and 1895. You can visit Xunantunich if you buy a trip in a travel agency or you can use the public transportation services from San Ignacio and a ferry, which will get you across the Mopan River. Then you continue to Xunantunich on foot (it will be a nice, 3 km long walk) ..
