Xochimilco Lake

The Xochimilco Lake was a originally part of the five lakes connected by channels -other lakes were named Xaltocan, Zumpago, Chalco and Texcoco. The lakes’ surrounding is inhabited by members of many central-American cultures, including the Teotihuacans, the Toltecs and the Aztecs. The lake area had been used for agriculture – although the lake itself is partly salty - there are many freshwater wetlands and springs on which so-called chinampas fields and floating gardens were built. The area of the Xochimilco Lake is divided into two parts, the historic area where survived parts of the irrigation canals and agricultural fields can be observed; and the ecological park, which is a part of a government project for saving the lake. Xochimilco Lake is known as the only place where Mexican axolotl or so-called water dragon still lives.
