The streets plans, the architecture, the decoration and the connection of the houses with the complex water supply system are especially rare. The villages stand on the banks of Nanhu Lake, which reportedly has a shape of a buffalo. The villages are the buffalo's belly, the small lake represents the stomach, the water system winding between the houses are the intestines and the bridges over the adjacent river represent its legs.
