You can get to White Island by helicopter or by boat from the city of Whakatane . The surface of the island resembles a moonscape and that is why it is one of the biggest attractions of New Zealand. In the past, White Island used to be an important place for the extraction of sulfur. Unfortunately, the eruption of 1914 killed all miners so the mine was closed. You can find traces of this period even at present - e.g. the mining machines are still there. The White Island volcano is 321 meters high, but its big part is under the sea surface (about 1600 meters) . In the middle of the White Island crater, there is an azure blue lake which became a very popular target for photographers. The island was declared a nature park in 1953. Access: only with permission. It is recommended to take part in one of the tours organized by travel agencies seated on the mainland.
