Have you been to Whitby, the beautiful seaside town in the United Kingdom, situated in England (North Yorkshire), app. 100 km (63mi) from York. The originally ancient monastery developed into an industrial port and shipbuilding town and a whaling centre...and into a popular tourist destination with a variety of interesting sites, such as the dominating Whitby Abbey (St. Hilda's Abbey), Trinity United Reformed Church and St Ninian's Church. The Parish Church of St. Mary or rather its churchyard inspired Bram Stoker to write the famous horror story of Dracula. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum is dedicated to Captain James Cook , who was apprenticed as a teenager to a Whitby shipping firm. There is an impressive bronze clifftop statue of him at the harbour, too. Among other favourites are Chateau Howard as well as towns Scarborough and Bridlington, all of them just a short drive from Whitby.
