There are many historical monuments in Whangarei. You can visit for example the Town Basin with plenty of coffee-houses and restaurants, or the Clapham Clock Museum showing a collection of more than 1,600 clocks. Most of them were made by A. Clapham, and the oldest dates back to 1720. Another interesting site in Whangarei is the Kiwi House, where you can see the living symbol of New Zealand - the Kiwi bird, one of the most endangered birds in the country. A little further we can see the Clarke Homestead Museum with a lot of Maori artifacts. There are many tourist attractions in the vicinity of Whangarei, such as the 26 m high Whangarei Falls falling down from a basalt cliff. It is said to be the most often photographed waterfall in New Zealand . Whangarei Falls are situated less than 5 miles north of the city centre, in the middle of a wooded country with lakes, rocky coves and lookout platforms. For the more courageous tourists, there is a path leading through the bush into the territorial reservation Parahaki Scenic Reserve on the eastern side of city. At the top of Mount Parahaki stands a war memorial, which offers a splendid view of the entire Whangarei and its surroundings..
