Tourist information and destination rating

Category: Cities, Local time: 00:36:23, Official WWW website:

Whanganui is an original Maori town in New Zealand . It is situated on the southwestern coast of the North Island, and it is a gateway to the Whanganui National Park . Whanganui had already been inhabited in the late 11th century by the Maori. In the 19th century, it became a distribution centre between the west, the east and the north. Today, Whanganui is not only an important industrial centre, but also an art centre. The main business district is called Victoria Avenue. Every year, the avenue changes into a charming place with thousands of flower baskets and other floral decorations on the occasion of the festival Whanganui In Bloom. A very popular tourist destination is the Durie Hill at the end of Victoria Avenue. The hill got famous for its unique elevator hidden inside the hill that will transport you to the top of the 66 m high peak. At the top, there stands the 34 m high Durie Hill Memorial Tower, which offers magnificent views of Mount Taranaki/Egmont – on the west and Mount Ruapehu - on the east. Other popular tourist sites in Whanganui are its beautiful gardens, such as the Moutoa Gardens and the Cooks Gardens. Whanganui also offers a regional museum, a gallery and the Whanganui Riverboat Centre – taking care of a unique reconstructed paddle steamer.
