Whakatane is one of the sunniest places of New Zealand . It is located on the eastern coast of the North Island, about 62 km from the cities Te Puke and Rotorua . In Whakatane the sun shines more than 2500 hours a year, therefore it is an ideal place for water sports and sunbathing on long beaches. One of the most luring attractions of Whakatane is swimming with dolphins in the Bay of Plenty, that is why tours are organized here. Other favorite sports are fishing, sailing or surfing. Probably the most visited beach in Whakatane is the Ohope Beach, which stretches about 12 km southeast from the city. As far as history is concerned, Whakatane offers the District Museum and Gallery, which acquaints the visitors with the first Maori culture. The area is a starting point of many tourist trails, such as the Nga Tapuwae O Toi Walkway, which offers splendid views of the sea. From the nearby look-out Kohi Point you can see the whole city of Whakatane, as well as the nearby Whale Island. When entering the port on the river Whakatane, you will see the Wairaka statue on the opposite rock, which is also a frequent tourist destination, especially at sunset.
