Whakarewarewa is a geothermal area in New Zealand . It is located in the middle of the North Island, on the outskirts of Rotorua . Whakarewarewa - commonly known as Whaka - consists of two separate parts: the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute and the Whakarewarewa Thermal Village. In the Maori part, there are Maori buildings, cultural performances and fortifications. The geothermal part of Whakarewarewa will catch your interest by the geysers Pohutu, Flat and Prince of Wales. The Pohutu Geyser is the tallest geyser in this area. Usually, it spews water 10 to 25 times a day to the height of 30 m. The Flat Geyser is a quartz sinter lake of an area of 1 km2, with more than 500 thermal phenomena. Other attraction of Whakarewarewa include the mud ponds Ngamokaiakoko and Brainpot – a siliceous pool, allegedly used for cooking enemies' heads. Whakarewarewa will bring Maori traditions and the magic of nature closer to tourists. In both parts, visitors are accompanied by experienced guides. Nearby, we can see other interesting thermal areas, such as the Waimangu Volcanic Valley , Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland and the Orakei Korako Geyserland .
