Westland National Park

It covers an area of 1 175 km2. In the 1960s during the gold rush, Westland National Park was attacked by gold seekers, still the virgin nature of the park remained untouched. The most famous glaciers of the park are Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier - the biggest glacier of the park. To these glaciers Westland National Park organizes tours for hikers, and also skiing tours, as well as sightseeing flights by plane and helicopter. You can see the beautiful lakes of the park from bird's eye view. Probably the most beautiful lake of Westland National Park is Lake Matheson, in which the peaks of the two highest mountains of New Zealand are reflected - Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Other important lakes are for example Lake Gault, Lake Mueller or Lake Mapourika - a popular place for picnics at the northern end of the park. Westland National Park is interwoven by myriads of tourist routes with beautiful look-outs and places to relax, e.g. the Copland Valley Track, which passes through a dense rain forest. Even these days, the western coast of the Tasman Sea in Westland National Park is sewn with paths of the gold diggers and their settlements, which you can explore.
