Tourist information and destination rating

Category: Region, Local time: 17:39:35

Situated between the cities Birmingham, Coventry and Dudley, West Midlands, UK, is nicknamed the Heart of England. Birmingham is 200 km / 125 mi away from London. The West Midlands region used to be the centre of an extensive canal system, but is now the hub of an equally complicated motorway network. It is one of the most important industrial and manufacturing regions and despite Charles Dickens’ description of ‘an industrialised realisation of hell’, the so- called Black Country, Birmingham and Coventry have much to offer the holiday visitors -eg. excellent shopping, theatre, galleries and exhibitions. Birmingham is also the home of the renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, formally the Sadler’s Wells Company, with the City Museum and Art Gallery holding the world’s finest collection of pre-Raphaelite paintings. Nearby is Cadbury World, the famous chocolate paradise, guiding visitors through the discovery by the Aztecs to the origins of the Cadbury family in Bournville. Walsall, to the north of Birmingham, is fascinating by its large open-air markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays. And then there is the birthplace of Jerome K Jerome, and also nearby is Wightwick Manor, a late nineteenth century house much influenced by William Morris, set in a beautiful Victorian -Edwardian garden, and much more.
