West Island is one of the 26 islands forming the atoll of the South
Cocos Islands (Keeling Islands) . West Island and Home Island are the only two inhabited islands. It is approximately 12 km long, and about 1 km wide. This is not a typical holiday resort full of restaurants, shops and organized trips. West Island is a quiet, but exceptionally attractive place with an authentic, tropical atmosphere which you can explore on your own. It is an ideal place for walking and for cycling. The local car rentals are prepared for the less active visitors. The island offers deserted beaches with white sand and clear blue water. Visitors can also discover the natural beauties of West Island, or they can try snorkeling and diving in the tropical waters. It is also possible to visit the neighbouring Home Island by ferry, where tourists can visit a museum called the
Oceania House and a protected natural park, the
Pulu Keeling on the North Island. The pleasant atmosphere of West Island is further enhanced by the friendly attitude of the locals.
