Volubilis is an archaeological site and the ruins of an ancient city in Morocco
. It lies in the northern part of the country, in the region Meknès-Tafilalet, near the town Meknes
, between Oued Fertassa and Khoumane valley. In the ancient times, Volubilis was an important Roman city. It was built at the beginning of the 3rd century BC. However, the area had already been settled in the Neolithic Age. The archaeological excavations began in 1915, afterwards the western part of the town was uncovered. This part of the town with the ruins of buildings and 40 floor mosaics remained relatively well-preserved. Volubilis entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.
