Vitoria-Gasteiz is a city in northernSpain . It is the capital city of the province Álava and the whole Basque Autonomous Community. It has about 230,000 inhabitants today. Vitoria-Gasteiz attracts visitors to its well-preserved historical center. The city is one of the stops on the Way of St James.

About the city

Vitoria-Gasteiz was, along with the French city Nantes, awarded the European Green Capital Award for 2012 and 2013. The oldest part of the city, El Campillo, was rebuilt after a fire in 1200. The only public university in Basque is seated in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The city is said to be the city with the second highest living standard in Spain .

Glances into history

The area of the today's city has been inhabited since Antiquity, when the Romans settled there. Then in 581, the Visigothic king Liuvigild founded the city of Victoriacum. The today's city Vitoria-Gasteiz was established in 1181 by Sancho VI King of Navarre.


The most significant tourist attractions in Vitoria-Gasteiz include the Santa Maria Cathedral from the 14th century, the Virgen Blanca Square with many old houses, the San Prudencio Basilica from the 12th century, the Dominican monastery Santa Cruz from the 17th century, the house Casa del Cordón from the 15th century, the España Square and the Berria Square.


Vitoria-Gasteiz attracts visitors to many interesting museums. The most popular of them are the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art of Álava, the Basque Museum of Contemporary Art, the Natural Science Museum, the Museum of Archaeology and the Álava Arms Museum.


Vitoria-Gasteiz hosts a number of celebrations, fetes and festivals throughout the year. One of the most important celebrations is the Andre Maria Zuriaren Jaiak Festival dedicated to the city's patron, which annually takes place from 4 to 9 August. Other festivals include the International Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival in June and the Azkena Rock Festival on the turn of August and September.

Vitoria-Gasteiz is accessible by car, bus train and plane. The Foronda Airport is located on the north-western edge of the city Vitoria-Gasteiz. The city lies on the main road and railway route connecting Paris and Madrid . By car, follow motorways E-5 (E-80) and N 622. You can also travel to Vitoria-Gasteiz by the interstate fast train Madrid - Valladolid - Burgos - Vitoria - San Sebastián - Irún. Within the city, you may rent a bike for free in the local bike rentals.
