Villach is a renowned spa resort and the second largest city of the Austrian federal state Carinthia. It is situated in the southern part of the country on the banks of the river Drau, between the lakes Ossiacher See and Faaker See. It has about 60 000 inhabitants.

About the city

Villach is a statutory city and the administrative centre of the region Villach. It is the second largest city of the federal state Carinthia and an important traffic junction of southern Austria and the whole Alpe-Adria region. Villach is a significant centre of winter sports and summer holiday activities. The city is surrounded by ridges of the Gailtal Alps and the range Karavanke (Karawanken) . For cycling lovers, there is an easy cycle trail starting directly in the city centre and leading along the Drau River.

Places of interest

The city centre of Villach spreads around the Main Square with beautifully colourful historical houses. In summer, numerous garden restaurants with pleasant atmosphere can be found in Villach. The most significant monument of the city is the St Jacob Church. When you climb three hundred steps up to the church tower, you will be rewarded by an extraordinary view of the city and its gorgeous surroundings. Not far from the church, there is the City Museum, located in a beautiful renaissance building. The most significant exhibit is the sarcophagus of a little girl, which was recently discovered when drilling the bottom of the Drau River. You can see the remains of the city’s original fortification in the vicinity of the museum. The nearby nature park named Dobratsch is also a popular place to see when visiting the city.

Spa Warmbad

Spa Warmbad is located about 3 km from the city centre. It was founded in the 16th century. The local thermal water reaches the temperature of 29°C and positively affects locomotive organs, blood circuit and respiratory system. The spa complex is accessible to public. There is a children’s playground, a paddling pool, water-slides, whirlpools and many other attractions.


The area of the today’s city has been inhabited since antiquity, supposedly around 3500 years B.C. The first written record of Villach comes from 1240. The city was affected by several fires and two earthquakes in 1348 and 1690. In years 1809- 1813, Villach was a part of the French province Illyria. In 1905, it was annexed to the part called St Martin. In 1973, it enlarged its size by connecting parts Landskron, Maria Gail and Fellach and reached its today’s area.

Touristic services and entertainment

Villach offers a wide choice of accommodation. A list of accommodation facilities can be found HERE . You can go shopping to the shopping centre named Atrio which includes around 80 different shops. There are also many shops on the main square and in the adjacent streets. For a good meal, try out for example the Brauhof Villach Restaurant, which offers traditional Carinthian meals, the Gasthof "Genottenhöhe", the Trastevere Restaurant famous for its fish specialities or pizzeria Dobner. For a good drink or cocktail, visit, for example, the Soho bar. Villach is the venue of a number of events and festival throughout the year. The local jazz festival, taking place in the middle of July, is an important cultural event in the city.


Villach is best accessible by car or train. The nearest international airport is the Woerthersee Airport in Klagenfurt (app. 40 km) . By car, it is best to take the motorways A2, A11 or A10. There are train lines from all bigger city in the country, e.g. direct trains from Munich , Venice , Ljubljana , Zagreb and Belgrade .
