History
Vicenza was allegedly established between the 11-7th centuries BC. During the Roman period it was called Vicetia. There was, for example, a theater and an aquaduct. Vicenza experienced its largest development in the 15th - 18th centuries, when it was part of the Venetian Republic. At that period all important buildings were built there. After the Napoleonic Wars Vicenza belonged to Austria. Since 1866 it has been a part of the united Italy . Buildings by A.Palladio
Vicenza has become world famous mainly due the famous architect A. Palladio, known as the author of the Palladian style, which later spread to Western Europe. Among his most important pieces of work in Vicenza, the most valuable are the Renaissance Palazzo della Ragione, also called Basilica Palladiana, then the Palazzo Chiericati and theTeatro Olimpico belonging to the oldest theaters in Europe; also the Villa Capra, known as La Rotonda. There are much more buildigs that are his pieces of work in Vicenza and its surroundigns. All buildings in the near vicinity and the Vicenza were inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.
