Vesuvius is one of the most famous and most dangerous volcanoes in the world. Located in the Gulf of Naples, approx. 15 km from Naples. It is the only active volcano in Europe. The peak reaches a height of 1,281 m, the basis consists of ancient volcano crater of Monte Somma. In 1780 b.c. awelin explosion started here. The eruption destroyed most of the territory, where now lies surrounding villages and the city Naples. The next major eruption was in 79 AD when the cities Pompeii, and Stabia Herkulaneum were destroyed. Another eruption took place from 1631 until 1944, it was the last eruption so far. By volcano professionals, huge erruption occurs roughly every 2000 years, so the next one can occur at any time.
