As early as the 12th century, there was a fortress standing on the place of the current castle. The Liechtensteins owned Valtice Castle since 1393, and they remained its owners till 1945. Late Gothic adjustments were done in Valtice Castle in the 15th century. A hundred years later, Valtice Castle was completely rebuilt into a castle. Major arrangements of the castle garden took place in the 18th century.
The most interesting places in Valtice Castle are the Mirror Hall, the Gallery and the castle's chapel. The underground of the castle hides the Valtice wine cellars. The local wine can proudly compete with white wines from abroad. Every visitor of the cellars can taste this wine, as wine tasting is a part of the visit. Valtice Castle is a part of the Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape proclaimed a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
In April and October, the castle is opened at weekends. From May to September, it is opened every day, except Monday. In the surroundings of Valtice Castle there is a large number of wonderful cycling trails.
