Valparaíso is one of the biggest and most important ports in Chile . It is situated in the region with the same name, about 120 km from the capital city Santiago de Chile , on the Pacific Ocean coast. The historic center has been recorded on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2003. The city has a population of about 300 thousand inhabitants.

About the City

Valparaíso is considered one of the most interesting urban areas in Latin America. The 9 universities based there make it also the cultural and educational center of the country. Moreover, the city can boast the oldest stock exchange in Latin America, the first volunteer fire brigade in the whole continent and the first public library in Chile.

Valparaíso is situated in a bay, which was first settled by the Changos, an ethnic group of fishermen. The first Spaniards arrived in 1536 and the first expedition ship was under Juan de Saavedra´s command. He named the settlement after his home village Valparaíso de Arriba in Spain.

Tourist Attractions

Among the most interesting tourist attractions we can name the El Cerro Alegre mountain, which constitutes the historic part of the city and offers a beautiful view. You can take the typical cableway Ascensor El Peral to get to the top. Other places of interest are the Echaurren square and the Concepción mountain, accessible with a funicular. The city also offers many remarkable churches. A frequently visited place is the former prison house Ex Cárcel, which has been turned into a culture center. Tourists get easily attracted to the traditional cableways called "ascensores". Taking such a cableway is an amazing experience. Among the most popular museums belongs the local Naval and Maritime Museum.

Valparaíso is also a place with gorgeous sand beaches. Water and beach sports are very popular there. The Portales beach (Playa Portales) is one of the most attractive beaches in Valparaíso. Those who love nature can set off to the nearby Jardín Botánico Viña del Mar. Golf players will appreciate perfectly maintained golf courses in the city environs. Football fans can go and see a match of the local football team Santiago Wanderers. They are the oldest professional football team in the country. A new sports event, which takes place every February, is a mountain bike race “Valparaiso Downhill”. Stairs and narrow alleys are a challenge for the mountain bike riders.

The city hosts various events, festivals, holiday events and celebrations. The most popular event is the local carnival, which takes place during the last week of the year. Every year the carnival in Valparaíso focuses on a different country, whose artists are invited to Chile. It ends with a grand fireworks celebration that circa 1 million people come to watch. It is actually among the greatest firework shows in Latin America.
