The Valley of the Sugar Mills are three interconnected valleys of San Luis, Santa Rosa and Meyer. They spread about 12 km from Trinidad , in the nature reserve Topes de Collantes , in Cuba . During the 18th and 19th centuries, there were dozens of sugar mills with 30,000 slaves who had to work on plantations and mills. The Valley of the Sugar Mills covers an area of 270 km2. 70 sugar mills have been preserved until these days. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Cuba was the largest producer of sugar cane. It was due to favourable weather conditions. Nevertheless, the sugar cane had to be transported quickly. Therefore in 1888, a railway from the Valley of the Sugar Mills to Trinidad and to the port Casilda was built here. After 1820, when slavery was abolished, many sugar mills began to fail. The valley's current landmark is a tower at the farm of Manaca Iznaga, who was a major sugar cane producer. The bell from the tower is placed at the base of the tower. The Valley of the Sugar Mills, along with the city of Trinidad have been registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.
