Vadstena Slott
This castle is the most significant sight of the Vadstena town. It was built in the 16th century on orders of the king Gustaf Vasa. It was supposed to defend the midland of Sweden , particularly Stockholm . It is a monumental fortified building with four towers. The whole complex is surrounded by a deep moat. There is an abbey with a church and former women and men monasteries in Vadstena. The abbey exists thanks to Birgitta who served there in the 14th century and later became the first Swedish saintess. The church was consecrated in 1430. Both men and women monasteries standing on the sides of the abbey nowadays serve as the hotel Vadstena Kloster. A museum focused on history of healing mentally ill is situated right behind the gate to the abbey’s cemetery. It resides in the oldest hospital of its kind in the whole Sweden . It used to be known as Stora Dårhuset which means The Big Madhouse. The museum is not suitable for fainters.Mårten Skinnare House
Next to the museum, a house of Mårten Skinnare can be found. It is a house of a fur and copper trader. The luxury of medieval traders’ houses can be seen inside. The most interesting part is a perfectly preserved bedroom at the first floor.Tourist Service
Among the most favourite accommodation options are the STF Hotel, Vadstena Vadstena Kloster , Vadstena Slottshotel, Pensionat Solgården and hotel Starby . Gamla Konditori Restaurant, Kloster Café, Mi Casa and a very elegant city restaurant Vadstena Valen are the most popular places to eat something. Info centre can be found in the castle. In summer it is open daily from 10 to 17, 18 or 19. Otherwise it is open from Monday to Friday, 11 — 14. As for the transport, it is the best to rent a bike in Sport Hörnen. Vadstena is a little difficult to approach. Bus goes from Gränna to Ödeshög (Monday to Friday at 6:45, 16:00 and 18:15) . Here you change to bus No.610 going from Ödeshög to Vadstena six times a day. The main bus stop is situated in the centre of the town, between the castle and the abbey. By car take the E4 highway or a road No. 50. The closest international airport is in Norrköping (Norrköping Airport) about 80 km away. Planes fly to Copenhagen , Helsinki or Alicante .
