Vac is a quiet historic city in Hungary . It is situated in the northern part of the country, about 32 kilometers from the capital city Budapest .

History

The first trace of the city of Vac, under its Latin name Uvcenum, is recorded in Ptolemy´s Geography from the second century. In the 11th century, Vac was promoted to an episcopate. King Stephen Báthory founded a bishopric there and the city gained an important status. However, the Gothic center and the Cathedral were destroyed during the Turkish occupation. Further development of Vac did not come till the 18th century, which gave it the present look. In the 19th century, the railroad contributed to the city development. Vac became the first Hungarian city linked with the city of Pest. During the Second World War, the city of Vac served as a prison for political prisoners.

Places of Interest

The most interesting historic sights of Vac can be found on the Március main square. For instance the Dominican Church and the Town Hall from the 18th century are situated there. An important building is the Bishop´s Palace, whose one part belongs among the oldest buildings in Hungary. On the northern side of the square is the Triumphal Arch. It is the only construction of this type in Hungary. The Triumphal Arch dates from the 18th century and was constructed to commemorate the reception of the empress Maria Theresa. If you set off from the square into the adjacent streets, you will see the Old Town Fortification and the Gothic Pointed Tower. On the Konstantin Square is situated the impressive Vac Cathedral from the 18th century. The stone bridge over Gombás-patak is bordered by statues of seven holy martyrs like the Charles Bridge in Prague.

Activities

Besides historic sights, Vac offers its visitors a number of activities. The city has an indoor as well as outdoor pools with a grass beach. Another option is the visit of the culture center of Impre Madách, where concerts are regularly held. One of the most popular activities is cycling. The most beautiful and quiet cyclist paths can be found on the opposite island of Szentendre, which you can easily reach by the ferry. The nearby Börzsöny mountain range, which is part of the Danube-Ipoly National Park, is suitable for hiking. About 6 kilometers north of the city of Vac you can visit the ruins of a castle from the 12th century. They were considered the gateway to Börzsöny.

Tourist Information

Vac offers a wide variety of accommodation options to its visitors. Adventure lovers will appreciate the Diósjenö camp with bungalows in the Börzsöny mountain range, which is situated close to the city of Vac. You can ask for basic tourist information in the visitor information center.

Transport

The closest international airport Budapest is about 40 kilometers away from the city. Regular bus and train connections go to the city of Vac from the capital and other cities. In the tourist season, a special historic train with a steam engine is dispatched from Budapest. If you prefer travelling by water, you can take the ferry (car transport is also possible) to the Szentendre island. Once there, you can continue over the bridge to the west bank of the Danube.
