Historical Sights

Cathedral Domkyrka is the most outstanding building of the city, originally a citadel rebuilt to a royal mansion. Its current look was finished in 1757. Many significant events were held in the cathedral including the resignation of Queen Kristina in 1654. Among other sights there is a church in French Gothic style in which the Swedish kings were crowned. Sacred and academic buildings from the 17th and 18th century are located near Domkyrka. The most significant one is Gustavianum which used to be the main building of the university. Gustavianum houses the Anatomical Theatre used as a classroom for medical students, a museum with Egyptian antiquities and a museum of classical Nordic archaeology. Current main university building was built in 1880 in Neo-Renaissance style and the library holds more than 30,000 books.
Linnaeus is the city’s botanical garden and it is the oldest one in the whole Sweden . It was founded in 1655.
