It is the United States Capitol where meetings of the legislative body of the United States of America, which consists of the House of Representatives (435 congressmen) and the Senate (100 senators) , take place. The immense building, dominated by a big dome, was built by the architect William Thornton during 1793 – 1800 in the American neo-classic style. The building was reconstructed several times in the 19th century. The whole complex of the Capitol covers the area of 1.11 sq km. It includes the United States Botanic Garden . Opposite the capital, there are the National Mall and Memorial Parks - a vast complex of parks, memorials and sports facilities.
The visitors' center established in 2008 includes toilets and restaurants. It is opened from Monday to Saturday from 08:30 am to 4:30 pm. Visitors can see there e.g. the Statuary Hall, which presents statues of famous American men, or the rotunda below the dome with richly decorated walls. Guided tours in the Capitol take place from Monday to Saturday from 8:50 am to 3:20 pm.
