Trieste is a city and seaport in Italy . It is located in the northern part of the country, towards the end of a narrow strip of land lying between the Adriatic Sea and Italy´s border with Slovenia. It is the capital of the autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trieste province. At present, Trieste has a population of approximately 205,000.


During the period 1382–1918, Trieste was very important within the European countries ruled by the Hapsburg dynasty as it was the capital of the Adriatisches Kunstenland, the Austrian Littoral region. After the Second World War, there was a lot of controversy between former Yugoslavia and other leading nations about inclusion of this strategic territory. Since 1954, Trieste has been a part of Italy .

Places of interest

The dominating landmark of the city is Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, a square with various palaces built in the 19th century and the Palazzo del Municipio (City Hall) . Other tourist attractions are: Miramar Castle, built between 1856 and 1860; and Castle of San Giusto with an exposition of historical weapons and Roman lapidary. The castle ramparts offer splendid views of the whole city of Trieste. In addition, there is a well-preserved Roman theatre, the San Giusto Cathedral, the Serb Orthodox- Temple of Holy Trinity and St. Spyridon, the Lutheran Church and the Synagogue of Trieste. People who seek for cultural events may want to visit a performance in the Teatro Verdi, built in 1798. Trieste is famous for festivals, for example, the Festa dei Turisti, which takes place at the end of August.

Opicina Tramway

Trieste is proud of its technical curiosity, the Opicina Tramway, which was first set into operation in 1902 already. The historic tramway operates between Trieste and the village of Opicina.

Trieste is a sea port, connected by regular ferry lines with ports in the Adriatic Sea and with the port in Durres, Albania . To the west from the city, there is a regional airport (Trieste-Ronchi dei Legionari) . To travel around the city of Trieste, you can go by bus, tram or by taxi.
