In the 16th century, Tours experienced its biggest boom. It was the heart of the Kingdom of France . However, the glorious days of the past of the city Tours are reminded by only few monuments that have survived the Second World War..

Today's city and monuments

Today, Tours is best-known as a city of art and history. This peaceful city has about 150,000 inhabitants. The most significant monuments include the St Gratien Cathedral, the St Martin Basilica, the castle (usually called chateau by the locals) and the Wilson Bridge. The most popular museums are the museum of colored glass, the museum of crafts and the art museum. There is a beautiful botanic garden in the city (Jardin botanique de Tours) . You can go jogging along the Loire River, or just relax at its banks and watch the other sportsmen. The surroundings of Tours are renowned as a wine-growing region.
