Tongariro National Park is located in New Zealand
, in the central part of the North Island. It is the oldest national park in the country, and it covers an area of nearly 796 km2
. The centre of Tongariro National Park is formed by active volcanic mountains, including Mount Ruapehu
, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe.
Despite the harsh climate, we can find here a rainforest, too. The rainforest lies near Lake Taupo, in addition to the typical plants we can see here some rare kinds of orchids, as well. Tongariro National Park is rich in various species of birds, several of which are endemic. The whole area is suitable for hiking, climbing and winter sports. Tongariro National Park was one of the many filming areas of the famous film The Lord of the Rings, that is why it is so popular.
