Tokyo is the capital and the largest city of Japan . It is situated on the biggest Japanese island Honshu, in Tokyo Bay. Tokyo is the seat of the Japanese emperor. It has more than 12 million inhabitants, what makes up 10% of the the world's population.

The History of the Imperial City

The original name of Tokyo (in literal translation the "Eastern Capital") was Edo. In the past, there were several settlements around Tokyo Bay. In 1457, Ōta Dōkan built Edo Castle. In 1603 Edo became the seat of the government, nevertheless the seat of the emperor remained in Kyoto . The city was repeatedly destroyed by widespread fires. Edo was renamed to Tokyo in 1868. A year later, the emperor moved to the city, and thus Tokyo became the country's capital.

Tokyo's Atmosphere

Tokyo is typical of its combination of ancient culture and modern life style - that is why it is sometimes called the City of Contrasts. Tokyo has evolved from a small fishing town into one of the most advanced regions of the world. On its way to the top it had to overcome a destructive earthquake, which in 1923 virtually destroyed the whole city, and later it had to cope with the consequences of the bombardments during the Second World War.

The Mysterious Imperial Palace

One of the most attractive places of Tokyo is indisputably the Imperial Palace, which stands right in the middle of the city, near the railway station. The palace is the pretentious residence of the imperial family. The entrance to the palace is strictly prohibited. There are only two days a year when the place is opened to the public: these are 2nd January, when the family celebrates the New Year, and on the birthday of the emperor - on 23rd December. The park in the eastern part of the palace is opened to the public all year through, and the admission is free.

The Temples

There are many temples in Tokyo, but visitors should definitely see the temple Sensoji built in the Asakusa district. In the temple, there is the statue of the goddess of mercy - Kannon, found as early as 628 by two fishermen. A small temple was built to hold this statue, and the temple was gradually expanding. During the Second World War, the temple was destroyed, however in 1958 it has been fully reconstructed, up to the smallest details. The main temple sweeps the visitors off their feet with its hugeness and its beauty.
The Shinto temple built at the end of the 19th century - Yasukuni Shrine is also worth seeing. The shrine is remarkable for being dedicated to all those who died fighting for the emperor.

Other Monuments

Tokyo Tower offers a beautiful view of some parts of the city, and even of Mount Fuji. It is a 333.3 m high observation tower, which was built in 1958. It reminds us of Eiffel Tower in Paris . The much sought after Chinatown can be found in the district called Yokohama. Here we can see a historical pagoda surrounded by the beautiful Sankeien Garden. During their stay in Tokyo, tourists can also visit the Silk Museum and the Kobayashi Doll Museum. They will surely appreciate the large number of parks, from which the most beautiful is the Hama Rikyu Garden. The city organizes many traditional Japanese festivals each year, such as the Fire Festival.
Near Tokyo, high up in the mountains, you can visit the beautiful Nikko National Park, which is famous for its waterfalls, volcanoes and temples.

The World's Biggest Market Place

Tsukiji, the biggest fish and grocery market of the world can be found in Tokyo, as well. For a certain period of time, the tourists were banned from the market place, but in the end it turned out that their absence had a negative effect on the prices. Eventually, the prohibition was revoked.

Night Life

There is an amazing amount of bars and discotheques in Tokyo. The most popular ones are the karaoke bars. If you are interested in this kind of entertainment, visit the Shinjuku and Aksaka districts.

Transportation

Tokyo has two international airports: Narita and Haneda. It is the point of departure for the Shinkansen, the Japanese Bullet Train, which will take you to different parts of Japan , comfortably and quickly. As far as Tokyo is concerned, the best way to travel is by underground.
