The Tiananmen Square has an area of 40.5 ha and is over 880m long and 500 m wide. The original square was built in 1651 and was four times smaller. The Tiananmen Square is named after an ancient gate standing in its northern part, called Tiananmen gate, which means Gateway of Heavenly peace. It is a gateway leading to the Forbidden City . The Tiananmen gate is older that the square. It was built in 1420 by the Ming dynasty. There are other important buildings on the square, such as the Monument of Folk Heroes and the Great Hall of the People. There is also the Mao Zedong mausoleum, and the National Museum of China, where all historic Chinese documents since the year 1919 can be found. The Tiananmen Square has a great cultural-historical value. It had become world well known with student’s protest of the year 1989.
