Thian Hock Keng (Temple of Heavenly Happiness) is the oldest and the most beautiful Buddhist temple in the city-state of Singapore . It was built during the years 1839-1842 for the Chinese seamen, who were, during the 19th century, arriving to the city in increasing numbers. Thian Hock Keng is dedicated to the queen of heavens and the protector of sailors - Mao Cho Po. The decoration of the temple consists of charming dragon sculptures, decorated beams and panes decorated with golden leaves. The side entrance of Thian Hock Keng is paved with coloured tiles with motifs of animals, roses and swastika symbols. Behind the main entrance, which is guarded by tiger and lion statues, there are two yards and a temple. Alongside Thian Hock Keng, we can see two pagodas. On 6th July 1973, the temple was added to the List of National Cultural Heritage of Singapore .
