About the Great Pyramid

The Pyramids in Giza were built around 3000 BC. The largest pyramid is known as Cheops´ or Khufu and it is 138 meters high. Still it used be even higher - 147 meters. It is no wonder that even today people stop and look at it perplexed, with only one question on their mind - how could they do that? The explanation is quite simple - a couple of ramps, levers systems, cylinders and oxen-pulled sled. Still, many believe that an extraterrestrial civilization must have been the builder - or at least they had helped with the construction. The pyramid was originally lined by white polished limestone. Unfortunately, the whole lining was lost, as it was used for the building of houses in the Cairo city. Not only the outside appearance is fascinating – there is a whole system of underground and aboveground rooms inside, which is considered as one of the supreme works of ancient art. The king's chamber, in which the Pharaoh was probably buried, was built from red granite so it would survive even enormous pressures of earthquakes.

Rachef´s pyramid

Rachef´s pyramid is another important pyramid in the complex. It is located about 160 meters from the Great Pyramid and it is a little bit smaller-136.6m high. Its structure is also a bit simpler - it is built on rocky subsoil and its incline is steeper.

Menkaur´s Pyramid

The third major pyramid in Giza is the Menkaur´s Pyramid. It lies about 200 meters from the Rachef´s Pyramid. Ii is also the smallest one - only 62m high. Due to the early death of the ruler it remained unfinished. In large parts it is built only of dried bricks, which were hastily laid on each other.

The Sphinx

The Pyramids in Giza would not be complete without the Sphinx -the colossal statue of a lying lion’s body and a man´s head. The Sphinx is probably the most famous Egyptian monument in the world. It is situated next to Great Pyramid and it was built during the reign of king Khafre. It is said that its head is his personal portrait. The Sphinx is carved from the rock and is 21m high and 74m long. Originally it was covered with plaster and paint. The Pyramids in Giza are a favourite tourist destination. Over 3 million visitors come to see the amazing pyramids every year.
