Taxila is a city and an important archaeological site in Pakistan
. It is situated in the north-eastern part of the country, in the province Punjab, in the valley of the Indus River, on the place of a Neolithic settlement. It is the former capital of the state Gandhara that spread from the region Peshāwar
There are many archaeological sites in the area covering app. 25 km2. The artifacts come from the period between the 6th and 4th century BC- the time of the greatest boom of the region. In the 5th century BC, there was an ancient form of "university", where medicine, mathematics, astronomy and other subjects were taught. The script kharoshti was invented in the city of Taxila. The archaeological site Taxila became a World Heritage Site UNESCO in 1980.
