In the 13th century, it was conquered by the Portuguese. The Arabic influence is still evident in Tavira. It has not been yet affected by mass tourism. The river Giläo flows through the city and divides it into two parts. You can get across the river by e.g. the old Roman bridge with seven arches (only for pedestrians) ..
Tourist sites
In the historic center of the city Tavira, there are old houses with unusually shaped roofs, palaces, churches, chapels, narrow street with stairways and a ruin of a Maori castle. There is a beautiful view of the city Tavira and the Giläo River from the ruin. Next to the fortress is the main church Santa Maria de Castelo, which was built upon the foundations of a mosque from the 13th century. In 1755, a major part of it was destroyed by a big earthquake. The church was later reconstructed. The snow-white church Santa Maria de Castelo is located on the highest point of the city. Other significant monument in the city Tavira is the Church of Mercy from the 16th century, which has survived the 1755 earthquake. It has a beautiful Renaissance portal. If you grow tired of visiting the monuments of Tavira, you can visit one of the local restaurants that offer traditional Portuguese cuisine, for example along the quay with a view of the Giläo River.Tourist information and destination rating
