Tarragona is an important historic city in Spain . It is situated in Catalonia, on the coast Costa Dorada. It has about 155,000 inhabitants nowadays. Tarragona attracts visitors mainly by its monuments. The city has been listed on the World Heritage List UNESCO since 2000. It is also a candidate city of the European Capital of Culture 2016.
Practical information
Tarragona is best accessible by car, train or plain. By car, you can get there by highway AP-7. Those who want to take a plane can use the international airport Reus-Salou. Tarragona is connected withMadrid and Barcelona by high-speed trains AVE and by trains Euromed with Valencia .

Tarragona is a sought-after destination of monuments lovers. The city has a long history and the many monuments reveal the past of the former capital and administrative and trade center of the Roman Spain. Among the most popular sites in the city Tarragona are the old town, the aqueduct Pont del Diable, the amphitheater on the coast Costa Dorada, the remains of the Roman city wall, the ruins of the Roman race track, the promenade Rambla Nova, the Augustus Palace and the cathedral. There are many other significant and beautiful monuments in the city, including numerous religious buildings.
Tourist attractions
Tarragona is also popular for its beaches, which have gained the "Blue Flag". Just a few kilometers off the city, there is one of the largest amusement parks in Europe- Port Aventura . Near the amusement park, there is the famous water park Aquopolis Costa Daurada .
For gourmets
Tarragona is also a renowned destination for gourmets and viticulturists. Some of the local specialties are e.g. the "calçotada" (grilled spring onion) and xató (codfish with chicory salad) .
Festivals
Tarragona hosts a number of various celebrations and festivals throughout the year. The most famous celebration is the St Tekla Feast, which takes place from September 15th- 24th. It has been celebrated since 1321! Other events include the local carnival, the international festival of fireworks, the festival of Dixieland music and the historical festival Tarraco Viva, which take place from May 10th- 20th and you may see groups performing historical swordsmanship and many historical figures dating since the Roman reign there.
