A Brief History of the City
The colonisation of the fertile region around Surdulica has a long history. The ancient settlers made their living on herding, mining and ore processing. Surdulica became a part of the Serbian state in the Middle Ages. Ore processing was continued in the whole area. The first written mention about Surdulica dates 1530. In the mid 15th century Surdulica became a part of the Ottoman Empire , which was unchanged until 1877. Military conflicts
The region suffered a lot during Austrian - Turkish wars in the 17th and the 18the centuries. A large number of the Serbs fled to the north and the Turks became the dominant ethnic group in Surdulica. After the departure of the Turkish troops in 1887, Surdulica was granted the city status. During the First World War a lot of Serbs were killed in Surdulica and its surroundings. In the short period between the wars Surdulica was greatly developing, unfortunately, only until 22 April 1941 when the Bulgarian army attacked the region. The atrocities and crimes against humanity committed by the occupiers finished on 5th September 1944 when Bulgaria surrendered. Surdulica became a modern city after WWII. However, even after several decades of the development in modern times, the city fell into war horrors again. In 1999, during the ethnic wars, Surdulica was three times bombed. How to Get There
