The city of Šumperk is the gate to the Hrubý Jeseník and Nízký Jeseník mountains. It is located in the northeastern part of the Czech Republic .

A brief history

Šumperk was founded in the 13th century as the centre of the area where precious metals were mined. At that time, Šumperk was the Royal town so it was often pledged. In the 16th century, it was in hands of the Žerotín noble family. Later it was possessed by the Liechtenstein family. In 1669 it burnt out. The town of Šumperk is known for inquisitorial proceedings (17th century) , when many people suffered. The biggest development of the town was the period of the 19th century due to textile industry. After the Second World War the German citizen, the majority at that time, were forced to leave the country. At present, Šumperk has a population of approximately 28 thousand.

The most significant historical monuments are: monastic Church of Annunciation, the Theatre Šumperk, the Marian plague column and the Doris Villa. There are various sports facilities in the town, for example, a swimming-pool, an open air swimming -pool, a sports stadium, a sports shooting range, a minigolf centre and a tennis hall.
