It was established in 1963. It has been registered as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1990. The Šumava National Park was established in 1991, following its inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage List. The area includes most of the precious natural communities of Šumava, for example: the remains of primeval forests, mountain forests, glacial lakes (Plešné, Laka, Prášilské) , as well as mountain and valley bogs with rich flora and fauna. The most precious parts of the national park are the Šumava Peat Bogs - the largest peat bogs of the Czech Republic , and the Boubín Virgin Forest - the oldest primeval vegetation, treasuring 400 years old trees. In the Protected Nature Reserve Šumava, we can see the largest and the deepest natural glacial lake of the Czech Republic – the Černé Lake (area of 18.4 ha, 40.6 m deep) and the second largest lake of Šumava – the Čertovo Lake . The badge of the Šumava National Park shows the forests of Šumava, and behind them we can see its highlands. The highest peak of the Šumava National Park is Plechý (1 378 m) with one of the glacial lakes – the Plešné Lake , at its foot. Behind the borders with Germany, the Šumava National Park continues as the Bavarian Forest National Park. The Bavarian Forest National Park and the Šumava National Park occupy about a third of the area of the largest continuous forest complex of central Europe..
