Suez Canal

The Suez Canal is the canal that connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It is 163 km long and it is situated at the territory of Egypt. It is also a border between Africa and Asia (Sinai) . Due to the Suez Canal, ships pass between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea without travelling around Africa. The building work was commenced in 1858 but it took 11 years to complete and open the Canal (it was on NOvember 17, 1869) . The Suez Canal does not have any locks because there is no difference between the sea levels. The Canal is designed for ships up to displacement 150 tonnes, submersion 16.1 m. Every year, over 25 thousand of ships pass through the Canal.
