Stuttgart is the capital of the state Baden-Württemberg. It is located in the south-western part of Germany . The name of the city originates from the word Stutengarten (mare garden) . A horse has been shown in the Stuttgart´s coat of arms as well.

Origin

Stuttgart was founded in 950 by Duke Liudolf of Swabia. Before 1160 it was a developing trade centre. At the beginning of the 14th century Stuttgart became a royal residence of the noble family of Würtemberg. After the Second World War the city was renovated.

Architecture

Stuttgart is distinctive with architectonic monuments from the medieval period up to the present time. The most significant monuments are the Old Town and the church (Stiftskirche) built between 1200 and 1600. Then there is Old Castle, New Castle (built in the Baroque style) , Wilhelm´s Palace (1840) and the State Theatre. Other interesting places are: Baroque - rococo castle named Solitude, Baroque Ludwigsburg Palace with a garden, Hohenheim Castle, Weissenhof (block of apartment houses in the functionalistic style) and the Stuttgart TV tower - which is the very first TV tower in the world.

Stuttgart is a major transport node with an international airport Stuttgart. The city is known for car production - Mercedes Benz - so car lovers should not miss the Mercedes Museum. At present, the city has a population of some 590 thousand.
