The Strokkur Geyser is probably the most famous geyser in Iceland . It is located near the so-called Great Geyser, in the south-western part of the country, east of Reykjavik . The Vikings believed that the geyser is the entrance to the underground. After the water surface of the geyser was artificially adjusted, it spouted only 60 meters high. Today, it wakes up only occasionally and irregularly. Most visitors are captivated by its neighbor, the Strokkur Geyser (“butter stamp”) , which is active from the 18th century. Approximately every 8 minutes, a hot stream of water spurts out of it up to20 meters high. The temperature of the geyser reaches 97°C.
