Stewart Island is the third largest island of the archipelago New Zealand . It is located south of the South Island. You can get to Stewart Island by boat from the town Bluff or by plane. The local bays and beaches are untouched by civilization, and the whole island prides in virgin nature. Stewart Island covers an area of approximately 1 746 km2, and thanks to its ancient bush it has become a paradise for scientists. There is only one colony on the island - the town Oban , lying on the eastern coast of the island in Halfmoon Bay. Stewart Island is a paradise for tourists, it lures them with its well-maintained hiking trails that lead them to the most beautiful sites of the island. Visitors can for example set on a three-hour trip from Oban to the Ackers Point Lighthouse, leading the tourists past the oldest building of New Zealand built in 1835. For more advanced hikers Stewart Island offers for example the Rakiura Track - a three-day circuit trail, or the North-West and the Southern Circuits - ten to fourteen days long tours. Among the most beautiful places of Stewart Island we can mention Big Glory Bay or Ocean Beach, where you can watch the kiwi in their natural environment, and also a number of other beautiful bays and beaches. In the vicinity of Stewart Island, there are several smaller picturesque islands with rich fauna and flora (Codfish Island, Muttonbird Islands, Ulva Island) . Tourists can access the islands by a water taxi from Oban or by a rented boat.
