Stargard Szczecinski is a significant historic city in northwest Poland . At present, it has a population of approximately seventy thousand. Stargard Szczecinski is distinctive with characteristic brick architecture. Besides tourism, the city is an important economic and business center, with a large industrial zone at the suburbs.


Downtown Stargard Szczecinski is proud of very interesting buildings. Prevailing construction materials are bricks. The architectural style is similar to the style and designs used in other cities in northern Poland and Germany since in the past the culture of the two nations was developing together. Stargard Szczecinski and several other cities in northern Europe have been included in the European Route of Brick Gothic.


Stargard Szczecinski and the surrounding region belong to the oldest colonized areas in Poland . First settlements in this part of the country had been founded in the seventh century.

Trade Crossing

Stargard Szczecinski is situated in the historical region of Pomerania. It was granted town privileges in 1243 and it was a member of the Hansa, which was an association of towns in the region of the North and Baltic Seas based on collaboration in the field of trade and business. At that time, Stargard Szczecinski was an important trade crossing, too.

German Rule

During the Thirty Years´ War, in the first half of the 17th century, a part of Stargard Szczecinski got burned and Stargard Szczecinski was taken over by Prussia. In 1871, when Germany was reunified, the town was included in the the German Empire. After the Second World War, large German areas of land were confiscated. These included the historical part of Pomerania, which - along with the town Stargard Szczecinski - became a part of Poland .


St. Mary´s Church

It is one of the largest brick churches in Europe. The church was erected in the 14th century.

City Fortification

The city walls and the gates were built in the Middle Ages. The Mill Gate is one of the symbols of the city. Similarly to other constructions in Stargard Szczecinski, the fortification walls are built of brick.

Visitors usually admire the Renaissance City Hall from the 16th century, which is really impressive.

There is a variety of cultural and social events in Stargard Szczecinski . The city´s most important cultural institution the - Stargardzkie Culture Center - regularly organizes various programs. The City Museum presents exhibits connected with the life in the town and its surroundings. There are lots of sports centers and sports facilities. The city has a basketball team playing the highest Polish competition.
