The St. Catherine Monastery was founded in the 3rd – 4th century, and it still serves ecclesiastic purposes. The monastery is one of the oldest working Christian monastery in the world. The St. Catherine Monastery was built around the allegedly burning bush, which still grows there. The foundation of the building is a three-aisled basilica with a unique collection of books and icons. The so-called Well of Moses, and even a mosque built in 1106 for Muslim pilgrims can be found in the complex. The mosque is no longer used for religious purposes. The whole monastery is surrounded by a 15 m high wall. In 2002, the St. Catherine Monastery has been registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List..
