Tourist information and destination rating

Category: Beaches, Local time: 15:24:55, Address: Spirits Bay Rd, Cape Reinga 0484, New Zealand

Spirits Bay is the northernmost bay of the North Island belonging to New Zealand . It is considered to be a sacred place of the Maori people. According to a Maori legend, all souls come to Spirits Bay after death, and they walk to the pohutukawa tree at Cape Reinga, where they start their pilgrimage to hawaiki (similar to our heaven) . The beaches in Spirits Bay are beautiful, the sea is crystal clear, while the surrounding nature is breathtaking. Visitors can find here sand dunes and coastal cliffs, too. Thanks to the large number of swamps, the nature around Spirits Bay abounds in endemic species of plants and animals, especially migratory birds. In Spirits Bay we can find several smaller bays with splendid beaches, such as Taputaputa and Sandy Bay. In the west, Spirits Bay ends in the northwestern tip of the island called Cape Reinga. It is a unique place where you can observe the blending of the Tasman Sea with the Pacific Ocean. Spirits Bay is a wonderful place suitable especially for those who seek peace, comfort and virgin nature.
