The remnants of the ancient city of Olous in the southern tip of the island prove the long history of the island. Most tourists, however, are attracted primarily to the northern part of the island, where they visit the remnants of the Venetian fortress built in 1579. This fort has never been conquered, no matter whether the Venetians or the Turks were hiding here. Eventually, the Cretan government decided to establish a sanatorium for patients with leprosy on Spinalonga. It happened at the beginning of the 20th century, and ever since most of the local inhabitants look at Spinalonga with contempt. Many witnesses and researchers claim that the sanatorium of Spinalonga was worse than prison. It was closed down only recently, in 1957. Spinalonga is definitely worth visiting. As soon as you enter the fortress' gate, you will feel the extraordinary and unique atmosphere of the place..
